Community shows us that through listening, reciprocity, and care, transformation emerges.

Place shows us that human flourishing is rooted in our relationships with those places.

Personal development teaches us that how we pay attention affects the quality of our relationships.

Across these different domains, we have come to recognize something simple: all design influences our relationships.

What happens when emerging intelligence meets the relational world we inhabit? 

What kind of relational world could AI bring into being?

  • Can AI technology deepen our relationship with the physical world rather than pull us away from it?

  • What forms of attention does AI cultivate?

  • What happens to wisdom when information becomes abundant?

  • How might AI participate in community without replacing community?

From engineering outcomes to cultivating consciousness

Rather than asking only what AI can do, we might also ask what conditions we are creating for human and planetary flourishing. A gardener’s attention is directed to the conditions which allow the plants to flourish.

Management asks: How do we make the system behave? Relational Design asks: What happens between us?

The distinction matters.

Relational Design is less about determining outcomes and more about designing conditions for flourishing.

In the AI race, are we overlooking the human race?

The rapid development of artificial intelligence is often described as a race toward greater capability. But capability is not the only measure that matters. The quality of our relationships will become the barometer by which we judge the emerging intelligence we are creating.

Let us move from human-centered AI toward life-centered AI, recognizing that human progress is inseparable from the health of our relationships with our communities, our places, and the living world.
